ASTER GDEM Malaysia v1.01

Have corrected my recent compilation of the ASTER-GDEM and it is now ready for download. I believe this is the most detailed freely available topographic map of Malaysia available. It is best used combined with other (road) maps as there is not other details apart from the contour lines.

Coverage: The whole of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei

Contours: 10m 100m 500m

Size: 470Mb

Compatibility: Mapsource 6.13.7

You can download individual tiles here or download a Mapsource (v6.137) compatible compilation (requires a slight modification to the registry - at your own risk!) from here.

The basic instructions for installing this is:

1. Extract (unzip) the contents of the file into:

2. Incorporate the file ASTER-GDEM.reg into the windows registry by double-clicking it. For your information, this is its contents:

Note: The ASTER-GDEM v1.00 and the ASTER-GDEM v1.01 cannot be installed at the same time unless you make some basic modifications to the directory and registry.

Tiles are named as 60NN1EEE.img where NN is the number of degrees North and EEE is the number of degrees East of the lower left corner of the tile (all tiles are 1 degree squared). The "60" represents Malaysia's IDD code, "1" represents v1.

1. Increased the horizontal resolution from 22 to 24 bits

2. Got rid of some annoying low resolution lines.

3. Have excluded portions of Kalimantan and Sumatra in order to reduce the final download size. You can use version 1.00 if you need this expanded coverage. If you are interested in producing your own topographic map for Indonesia or other countries, I will be happy to help (see my blog entries).
